Your most valuable asset?
When I was young and living my life away from my home village, I never really understood the importance of time. I would come back home every six weeks and my parents, family, friends would come to visit me wherever I was living at the time (22 house moves in 24 years ensured they always had somewhere new to holiday!) however whilst I always valued our time together, I didn’t realise to what extent until recently.
As I have got older so has everyone else, the things we used to do are no longer viable, shopping with my parents is no longer a thing now their arthritis has taken hold and they are less able to tread the streets of the local town, I miss these days out! Time with many of my friends is the same, some of them now too tired or indeed have ailments of their own, so concert going (the effort of getting there itself is a tiring thought), hill walking, horse riding, a full day at the shops and more are now off the to do list.
The above however has made me realise that time is indeed our most valuable asset, I can assure you though as you age afternoon teas, or in fact times just sitting chatting are just as joyful as going to a concert or a shop. Time is indeed the one thing we can’t claim back and in truth helps to create memories that will live on forever.
Recently I was at an event and I got chatting to someone a good few years younger than me, I asked them if they had travelled far, two and a half hours was there reply, I then asked if they were travelling back that day too? They explained they hadn’t decided as their parents lived close to the venue where we were, so they had thought to stay with them overnight, but they weren’t sure. My advice ‘never give up an opportunity to spend those you love, trust me every moment is precious’ As I explained my memories to them I think they realised that actually yes, spending the evening with their parents was indeed what they wanted to and the journey back could be made the next day.
I can guarantee you this, the parents would have been thrilled.
So, today I urge you to always take that time to spend your most valuable asset on those and with those who you hold dear, whatever that looks like.
Enjoy making memories, they are indeed truly the gift of time.
